Imphal, March 30:
The impact of the North East policy of the Government of India is the most aspect that the Women Commissions of all the North Eastern States should be really concerned about, expert member of National Commission for Women Rose Mary Dzuvichu has stated.
While speaking at the inaugural function of the Nagaland State Commission for Women at the darbar hall of Raj Bhavan of Nagaland on March 28, Rose Mary said the North East policy of the Government of India is going to give a serious impact on women in the region.
The gender issue, women trafficking and the problem of HIV/AIDS, etc being faced by the women would increase in the region as a direct fall out of the said policy.
So this aspect of the problem should be clearly understood by all the Women Commissions of the region, she said.
Rose Mary further observed of all the problems being faced by the women of the North East living in the existing armed conflict situation, women in Nagaland are suffering its impact the most.
Yet there has been no policy for rehabilitation of the victims of armed conflict in Nagaland till date.
So there is the need to frame such a policy at the earliest .
Such rehabilitation policy is very much essential for the women victims as well as for their children.
Nagaland Government should give serious attention to this.
Alcoholism, HIV/AIDS, customary laws, female foeticide and crimes and violence are some of the issues which the women in Nagaland are facing at present.
The custom of early marriage, lack of parental support and maintenance are very much part of the lives of women living in Nagaland, she pointed out.
Principal Secretary of Nagaland Bamoz Jamir, who also spoke at the occasion noted that the demand for setting up a Women Commission of its own in Nagaland is being raised for the last 12 years.
Setting up the Women Commission is essential for empowering women as well as for resolving the issue of gender inequality in the society.
Though the Nagaland Governor has given his assent on setting up the Women Commission on October 28, 2006, Governor K Sankaramarayanam official inaugurated the same on March 28.
Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio who is also the Minister of Women Development of the State and Speaker of the Nagaland Assembly speaker were also present during the function as guests of honour.
In his address, Neiphiu Rio assured that Nagaland Government would extend every possible assistance to the newly set up Commission in carrying out its activities if such activities are within the ambit of the Indian Constitution.
Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Dr Jamini and member Lingjhaneng Gangte were also present at the occasion.
