Imphal, September 19, 2010: The All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) today claimed to have seized intoxicants and contraband items worth more that Rs 33 crore in the months, from December 20, 2009 to June 20, 2010.The AMADA, since its inception on June 26, has been publicizing reports of its activities for every six month and the same for the period from December 21, 2009 to June 2010 was disclosed before the media today at its head office at Keishampat.

AMADA now has 127 local councils across the state showing an increase of four since its last report published in December 2009. Addressing the media, secretary (organization), K Meghachandra said that during AMADA's drive against drugs, intoxicant items, illicit trafficking and alcohol, they seized items worth Rs 33,13,73,638 during the period from December 21 of last year till June 20 of this year.

Among others, the intoxicant items seized by various local units of the Association included locally brewed liquor (Yoo-ngou), foreign liquor (Yoo-ngang), No.4 (Heroin), Spasmo Proxyvon (SP) capsules, Ganja, Recodex, Raja-Khaini, Golden-Tobacco, Khaini, Talaab, Zarda, Mithamana, poppy plants among other items.

During the period under report, a total of 412 persons were caught for possessing, abusing and trafficking intoxicated items.

They were handed over to their respective families with the advice to not repeat their wrong doing, he said.

The Association had conducted special drives by setting up Special Task Forces to prevent abuse of intoxicant items during festival days like Christmas, New year's Bye and New year etc.

A remarkable drive conducted by the Association was the drive against cultivation of poppy plants in the hill areas.

It started the poppy plant elimination drive from January 13, 2010. In the one of the poppy plant elimination drives at Mangkot Chephu village of Ukhrul district, volunteers of the Association with the assistance of security force and the narcotic bureau destroyed poppy plants which could produce opium worth Rs 6,60,000 and which was intended to be used in manufacturing Heroin (No.4).While destroying the plants, they also conducted an awareness programme for the villagers on the evil impact of cultivation of poppy.

They distributed two bags of potato seed, one bag of pea seed and another bag of mustard seed for plantation in lieu of poppy, Meghachandra added.

They conducted the awareness programme on the evil of planting poppy with slide shows at Leingang Ching village of Ukhrul district in which various resource persons also extended valuable service.
