One AMEF cadre killed in police ops in NGH, narrow escape for C-in-C

Shillong, February 02 2015: A cadre of the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) was killed on Monday after the North Garo Hills (NGH) police had a run in with a group of cadres belonging to the outfit.

The incident happened between the villages of Bolda Abri and Soba Jombal at about 6.30 on Monday morning.

However, the commander in chief of the outfit, Jack Marak, who was also with the group, had a providential escape.

According to information received, the NGH police acting on a tip-off, launched an operation on a make shift camp of the AMEF where about 10 cadres of the outfit were taking shelter.

The operation was led by the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and COBRA personnel which resulted in the death of one Sengrak S Sangma alias Andalao Matgrik (22) of Hahim in West Khasi Hills (WKH) .

"We received inputs of their whereabouts and an operation was launched.

They were taking shelter in a makeshift camp in the village with Jack Marak also being there.

He however managed to escape the police firing", said the Superintendent of Police (SP), NGH, JFK Marak.

According to police sources, the camp could accommodate up to 10 people and had provisions like blankets and pillows along with rations.

Explaining further Marak said, "Jack had the narrowest of escapes as our personnel had seen him and fired but there was a tree in the way giving him just enough time to escape.

The heavy attack may also have injured some cadres of the outfit but they all managed to escape taking advantage of the terrain" .

The cadres had been moving after operations were launched against the outfit in WKH.

"They were running from the operations that had been launched in WKH, where an encounter took place and had come to NGH.

Now they are again on the run", added Marak.

The encounter led to the recovery of one 7.65 pistol with 3 live rounds and 2 empty cases of ammunition, 8 empty cases of AK ammunition, 23 PEK explosives, 4 detonators, Kenwood and Motorola wireless sets, demand letters and other incriminating documents.
