In a shocking incident, a 42-year-old man, who came to buy goods for his daughter's birthday died in an accident after he was chased by a group of bandh supporters at Uripok Tourangbam Leikai last night.
According to information received by The Sangai Express, Okram Balindro s/o Chaoyaima of Pishumthong Oinam Leikai came to Khwairamband bazar to buy some items related to a ritual ceremony to be offered at Shree Shree Govindajee temple on his daughter's birthday which falls today (May 21).However, as the bandh clamped by the JAC constituted against the assault on Tarini intensified, Balindro could not return home and he stayed at a friend's place at Uripok.
From there, he made a call to his family informing that he would return home after the situation cools down in the night.
When he came out from his friend's house on a Honda Activa to return home at around 9.45 pm, a group of bandh supporters allegedly pelted stones at Balindro and chased him.
In his bid to escape from the bandh supporters, he drove fast towards Tourang-bam Leikai side but acciden- tally hit the iron pillar of BT Flyover.
As he received serious head injury in the accident, he was immediately rushed to RIMS hospital.
Balindro's father said that they thought that his son would return home after the situation at Uripok was stable in late night.
However, at around 10 pm, they received a call from the police informing that Balindro had met with an accident and he had been admitted to RIMS hospital in a critical condition.
He said that when they reached RIMS, around 10 to 15 youths who brought Balindro to the hospital were also there.
He said that his son was taken to Sky hospital for CT scan and later taken to Shija hospital for treatment.
However, doctors of the private hospital declared Balindro brought dead.
Later, the hospital authority handed over the body to the police after giving information to RIMS authority last night itself.
Balindro's father said that he has nothing to say on the tragedy which has taken his son's life.
"I can only say that I am very upset as I won't be able to see my son again", the visibly emotional father said.
He added that the bandh supporters might be angry with his son, so they chased him.
Balindro's mother said that she is also a Meira Paibee volunteer and she also takes part in all the major agitations staged in the State.
The mother said that she takes major role in controlling irate youth in such agitations in their locality.
She said that she is so worried about her daughter-in-law and two grand children.
"Now, as my son is no more, who will look after them?", she lamented.
