Imphal, Sep 04:
Governor Dr SS Sidhu has extended his greetings to the people of Manipur and specially the teachers' community on the occasion of Teachers' Day which is being celebrated all over the country tomorrow.
In his message, Dr Sidhu reminded that Teachers' Day is being celebrated every year on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of late Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishna, former President of India who was a great humanist, philosopher and outstanding teacher.
Stressing on the role of teachers in shaping the character of the students, Governor said that today's students are tomorrow's pillars of the Nation and the Nation's strength lies on them.
So teachers have crucial role to play in shaping the character of the students and also to contribute in the harmonious development of their personality.
Expressing concern over erosion of moral values among the students today, the Governor noted that in ancient times in the Gurukula system, Gurus played a vital role in shaping the character of their Shishyas and the Shishyas had high regard for moral values.
But unfortunately, this regard for moral values has been gradually eroding.
Hence, teachers, besides educating the students must strive to sensitise the young minds to respect these values, and the students on their part must devote themselves to their studies so as to enable them to shoulder the responsibilities to be reposed on them by the society on due course, he exhorted.
Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Chandel District and National Students' Union (NSUI), Manipur have also conveyed their Teachers' Day greetings to the teachers, while acknowledging the role and sacrifices of the teachers in inculcating knowledge to the young leaners to face the challenges of life.
