Police commandos facing charges, cases to be shunted out

Imphal, November 19 2013: With the stated objective making the State police commandos more professional and to instil a sense of discipline, the State Government has already set rolling the process of shunting out police commandos to other units who are facing cases or charges.

In an exclusive talk with The Sangai Express this evening, DGP MK Das said that as against the Government sanctioned strength of 1600 police commandos, there are 1800 police commandos.

The excess 200 commandos will be shunted out to other units and those facing charges and cases will also follow suit, he said.

The decision was taken after a Committee set up to streamline the functioning of the police set up submitted its recommendation, said the DGP.

Stating that indiscipline will not be tolerated at any cost, the DGP said that recalcitrant police commandos too would be shown the door and moved to other units.

Certain parameters have also been put in place for police personnel to be attached to the commando units, he said and added that this include fitness, attitude, discipline, weaponry handling etc.

Towards this end, the performance of each police commando will be reviewed every two years, he added.

To ensure efficiency and discipline, the police commandos will be imparted training.

This training may be imparted by the Army, the BSF or other para-military forces, he added.

A proposal has also been set up for police officials to be attached to the commando units till the age of 50 while for the others the cut off age has been fixed at 45 years .

As part of the drive to make the police force more disciplined, strict dress/uniform code will be followed, he said and added that this means, only police commandos will be allowed to wear the uniform meant for commandos.

Likewise IRB personnel, VDFs, civil police will have to stick to the uniform prescribed for them, he said.

Touching on other topics, the DGP said that adequate security measures have been taken up to ensure that the upcoming State Sangai Tourism Festival passes off without a hitch.

Strict security arrangements have also been put in place to ensure the safety of foreign dignitaries and tourists expected from Myanmar, Thailand and other parts of the country.

CCTV cameras have been installed and they are all functional, he said and added that there will be adequate lighting at the festival venue.

Meetings with sister organisations for the overall security of the festival have been held and many important points discussed and deliberated upon.

Stating that the overall security measure is two fold, the DGP said that no efforts would be spared to ensure free flow of movement to the festival venue.

Security personnel to be on duty during the festival have been sensitised and directed to be courteous to the people who turn up for the festival as well as to extend all possible help whenever approached.

The DGP also appealed to the public to inform the police if they come across any suspicious looking objects.

Unlike in the previous years, this time there will be different entry and exit points.

The Sangai Tourism Festival is scheduled to kick off from November 21 and it will go on till November 30 .

The Chief Ministers of Saigang and Mandalay provinces in Myanmar and delegates from Thailand are expected to attend the festival.

A chartered flight will land here on November 21 along with the foreign dignitaries.
