Imphal, June 06: Girls once again outshone boys in the High School Leaving Certificate Examination 2001, with a total pass percentage of 46 against 35 percent that of boys, according to the results of the HSLC examinations declared this afternoon.

Haobam Sangamita of Nirmalabas High School with 584 marks, secured the first position, followed by Sapam Lamyanba Khuman of St.

Joseph's School, Imphal with 580 and Selina Thounojam of Little Flower School with 579 marks for the second and third positions respectively.

Haobam Sangamita secured letter marks in Manipuri, English, Mathematics, Social Science and Higher Mathematics.

Second position holder Lamyanba Khuman apart from securing letter marks in six subjects, topped in Science, Social Science and Computer Science to become one of the only three persons to secure letter marks in six subjects.

In what is believed to be unprecedented, but all the same becoming a trend, not even a single government school student managed to make it among the top 25 position holders.

A total of 14292 candidates passed the examination out of 393248 appeared for an overall pass percentage of 36.16113 candidates secured first division, 6649 candidates turned out successful in the second division, 4204 in the third division and 1826 in simple pass.

Altogether 173 students were expelled during the examination for employing unfair means.

The Catholic schools altogether having run into rough weather for the last several months, put up an excellent performance with 25 students appearing in the top 25 position shared by 34 students.

Except for the fifth position secured by Brighter Academy student, all the top ten positions went to the Catholic Schools.

Unlike previous year, regular and external candidates failing in three subjects are eligible for compartmental examination to be held in the last week of July, 2001.
