The Subtle Fragrance
Prof Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
My nose always feels a lovely smell
in the air, in the water, in the soil
in this land of mine sweet and dear.
Is it from the Thaaballei night jasmine of love
or from the spring rose of beauty
or from the Leibaaklei Iris of virtue
or from the U Thambal magnolia of freedom
or from the tender Shinggarei flowers
that fall off from the tree of sorrow of truth?
But
the sad thing is,
whatever fragrance it is,
it's marred by some cacophony selective
when I long for quiet;
by the drought in the rivers
when I become thirsty;
by the gloom of the ambience
when I need light to write.
I've an intent to extract a synthetic perfume
with the molecules of love and beauty;
impregnated with
those of truth, virtue and freedom
a perfume that shall emanate
the smell of love and beauty
when one seeks for it;
the smell of truth and virtue
when one sits in a trench of meditation;
the smell of inherent freedom
when one calls it a day.
What worries me is
they will call me a chemist wizard artificial;
or a sorcerer scattering potion of truth.
But I know myself', I am in fact
as natural and true to myself
as this fragrance is in the air.
