A Speck of Dirt
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
A fresher has been kidnapped
By a gang of boys who look like humans;
Human remains are found the next day
Beside a rivulet running through a pine grove.
She has been raped, and then murdered
And she has not been simply murdered –
They have skinned
The burnished skin of the face
Of the girl whose future looks rosy.
The rosy cheeks of innocence
Are badly burned with twigs and dead leaves
And they have denied the girl her humanity.
This report –
I have read about it in the newspaper
And every day I have read about
A host of strange happenings,
And now my eyes have become accustomed to
Strange things –
Things real or imagined I can no longer distinguish.
Strange to say, I am new to this game
And I wonder why
And I do not know
How long they have been in this game
For I have seen them loitering in the street
Seeking the divinity in human form
Of Jesus the animal
And annihilating him on the cross
Unable to find their better selves, their humanity.
