"ST status for Meetei" at Guwahati, Assam
We, the World Meetei Council Assam State Unit in association with Manipuri Basti Meira Paibi (MBMP), Manipuri Rajbari Students’ Union (MRSU), United Manipuri Association Assam (UMAA) and Achanba Lup (AL) have organized a DHARNA to demand Scheduled Tribe status in Assam today, 19th May, 2024 at Manipuri Rajbari, Guwahati to urge the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur Shri Nongthombam Biren Singh who has delayed in sending the two reports for ST i.e. the latest Socio-economic and Ethnographic reports of Meetei to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.
The Meetei community living in Assam have been demanding for Scheduled Tribe status to protect the identity of Meetei much earlier than the Manipur Meetei's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
But our demand is being kept in abeyance as Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "I will take the necessary action to include you in the list of Scheduled Tribes in the Indian constitution the next day the Meetei of Manipur become ST".
"ST status for Meetei" at Guwahati, Assam
The fact of the matter is we can be included in the ST list only after the Meetei in Manipur become ST. This is the rule position.
And it is only the Meetei who are going to be left behind to be perished in just a generation's time. And it is only the ST status that can protect us.
Therefore, for the sake of our common future both in Assam and Manipur we, the Meetei people of Assam earnestly urge the Hon’ble CM of Manipur to kindly send the two reports on Meetei as desired by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India so that the process of inclusion of the Meetei in the ST list may be completed before the process of Delimitation of 2026.
