Ruining lives and prospects

For a State known for stabilizing the traditions of aberrations and naturalizing abnormalities as a fallout of prolonged socio-political turmoil, the news of over 2000 students who had not been issued admit cards for appearing in the Class X and Class XII examinations under Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) comes as no surprise.

In the last few days, these students have faced troubles they could have never imagined. They have been subjected to not just the extreme trauma caused by the grim chances of appearing in the annual examinations but also had to bear the bigger trouble of finding a solution on their own as witnessed from the series of protests launched recently.

With several civil society organizations and student bodies expressing their utter disgust with the whole episode, the Chief Minister has stated that the State Government was considering to constitute a high level inquiry committee to look into the controversy arising out of non-issuance of admit cards to students of some schools by the CBSE authority.

While the concerns expressed could be welcomed, it is to be noted that the damage has already been done. Under any given turn of events, these students will finally be left to fend for themselves. Even if the students are allowed to appear for the examinations under certain conditions, they will not be in a position to deal with the pre-examination trauma already experienced.

The issue no longer demands time consuming process of consideration but urgent action. Here, it is the duty of a responsible Government to step in and exhibit its wisdom and accountability.

There is no use in displaying the air of ambivalence or pointing out that helplessness by the authorities with an answer most observers already know – that CBSE does not come under the State Government’s jurisdiction.

As pointed out, the students have landed in such a predicament due to the failure to check the infrastructure, administration and teaching capabilities of the mushrooming schools in the State with false claims.

Under such circumstances, the State Government, primarily the Education Department should be in a position to intervene with workable solutions.

While suggesting or offering a solution, the authorities should not forget to take stringent actions against all those responsible for bringing in such troubles to the lives of the students.

If the Government fails to chart a course for the best interest of the students even after identifying the cause, the tradition of naturalizing abnormalities and aberrations will continue to haunt the people in the days to come.
