Responsibility of the Manipur in past and at present

By: Chengleima Laishom *

Recently, Irom Sharmila was nominated for the World Peace Novel Prize after her long journey of fasting for more than 4 years to remove AFSPA from the state. I think if we are determined well enough like her, this world will know us. Her contribution and responsibility of the people of Manipur become popular and world has recognized.

Really, I will be proud of having Meetei Mayek (Meetei Script) in my Library but it will take time to come up with such Meetei Mayek Literature Book. I know it was not an easy task to fight for our own script in the state. Recently, the State Library was burnt down during the mass agitation of Mayek. I think our political leaders are not aware of their own Identity and culture. Certain things can be resolve by agitations and strikes; if, they know the real ground truth of the future of people.

So, every individual has certain responsibility towards the society whether it is small or large. Manipur is at present having many problems of economics, militancy, education, politicians, Human rights, AFSPA, Indian Armies, Manipur Commando, Sports, drugs, business, Transport, outsiders, riots, Indian politics, , religions, assimilation of Culture , tradition, unity, integrity, state boundary, ecology, Food, Construction and infrastructure etc.

Manipur belongs to the mongoloid society who speaks Tibeto-Burmese language having their rich culture and tradition with nearly 30 different types of community. I am trying to say that although Manipuris are also Mongoloid but we are not like the other mongoloid people in the other parts of the world who are quite advance, hard working, and very intelligent.

The entire people of the state of Manipur-women and men, youth and students, town’s people as well as village people- have demonstrated clearly their determination to ensure repealing of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958. People of Manipur have not fully enjoy the freedom of rights, and even freedom of Identity. People of the state are under such rule that is more dangerous than the British rule.

Are the people of Manipur having the same right of freedom at their own native place like those in other part of India? This is the reason; Manipuri has been traumatic feelings , where the society is neither developed nor peaceful for survival.

Some of the responsibility taken into account from time to time since British time.

British (1891- 28 August 1947 ):

It was the prevailing situation while Manipur was fully neglecting its script, tradition, religion and it witnessed fight between the brothers and sisters that British defeated the Manipuri Kingdoms and conquered on 27th of April 1891 A.D. Jubaraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General were hanged by neck on 13 august, 1891 A.D at Mapal Kangjie-bung (Polo ground). Today Manipur observed 13 August as a mark for their bravery.

The British rulers introduced AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) to tackle the activists of the QUIT INDIA movement. India is controlling Manipur like the British did to India. It is very unfortunate that India is still adopting such policy, which was introduced by British to consolidate its imperialist design.

During the British time, Manipur was with half-Hindu and nearly half-Christian nation with a very few percentage of people remains faithful to their as their own beliefs of Nature -Gods. Mainly the Meeteis have been adopting the Vaisnava (Hindu) religion, since the 1709 after the influence of a Ramandi missionary during the King Pamheiba. The king Pamheiba was totally against Sanna-Mahi and Pakhangba Laining (the original and the oldest religion of Manipur since 33A.D). However, of late Sanamahism has been gained popularity after Manipuris realised for their identity and faiths.

British in Manipur created a better identity for the Manipuri nation; they introduced the world unique species of flower species "Siroi Lily" to the world. Moreover, the Game Polo was introduced in Manipur after finding its historical importance in Manipur. In addition, they never thought of establishing a church inside the Kangla even though they rule for more than 50 years. They even criticized the construction of Hindu temple for the lord Govindajee, as Kangla was the only place, introduced to the world by the Meetei First King God.

The Manipur Govt. acts against the revivalism of our own script and religion, which is the only Identity we have for the future world. British were far better than our present Govt; as they have future-minded plans, for example while you travel along the main street of Imphal; you will see the trees planted at more wide space from the road. They think for the future, whereas Manipur Govt. plants the tree and then cut afterward for road expansion in very populated areas.

I have some reason to thank the British, as their rule did not affect our society in terms of assimilation of culture, tradition and religion mainly to the Meetei indigenous people. They are even more inclined to learn about the different communities of the Manipur than our scholars who are from Manipur.

Anyway, this is a brief historical perspective of our society, which is very difficult to back if you do not realise yourself. No one will come to regenerate our lost culture tradition and religion instead; you will find more difficult situation and suppressions.

Manipur was again an independent nation after British gave freedom to us. Manipur return as an independent nation within the night of 28 August 1947 to 21 September 1949). However it did not last long, nearly 2 years after we got independence from the British to revive our own culture, tradition, religion and everything belonging to us, the newly form independent India and its Government in New Delhi pressurised the king Budhachandra to sign a merger agreement with India under very unusual circumstances. Without prior consideration and approval, he became the elected member of Manipur assembly. On October 15, 1949, Manipur was annexed to the India.

Government of India (1949- 21st September to Till date)

Manipuris came under the rule of Indian Government since 1949. One of the biggest/greatest regrets in our mind is that the then Prime Minister Of India Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1953 discontinued the payment of Kabow Valley agreement to Manipur. This was the first biggest loss of our state after we joined the India. If Kabow valley becomes the part of Manipur we will not be a land lock state within the Indo-Burmese ranges as it will extend upto the western bank of Chindwin river, presently at Myanmar.

On June 21 1972, Manipur attained statehood after the several years of demand by All Manipur Student Union and several organisations. In 1992, Meetei-lon (Manipuri) was included in the 8th schedule of as one of the 18 official language of India with the controversial script of Meetei-Mayek.

Therefore, we have realised our script from suppression for 200 long years. Now we have to do away with the human rights violation in our society done by the Indian army in the name of AFSPA. The AFSPA was highly noticed by the world after Ms. Monorama was brutally killed in 2004 by the personal of Assam rifles.

Manipur is facing a huge economic crisis, people are work-less, educated people are mentally depressed. The region does not have good leaders since the time we joined the Indian union till now. Most of the Manipuri politicians act against the people’s right as they neglect their people. Why many people died to remove the AFSPA and many people were injured and jailed for the return of our script and dispute of lands. This may be due to lack of knowledge for our own origin and rights. These are lessons we have to learn and to be understood clearly.

The Manipuri society:

Youths in Manipur are at a worse state of mind and with a frustrated future. Youth are the pillars of futures but in case of Manipur youths dies faster than older people. 60% of youths know how to discover a new drugs model, which is easily accessible like dendrite, perfume, tablets, and other tablets and drugs. Some of youth’s organizations can bundh the state road in the name of strike after the advice of some business community who belongs to other state for their good profits. Sport is our blood but they are less inclined as they have less muscle and mental power. Remember Manipur even though a small state has more number of qualified players in the international arena. The thing is that youth have spoiled their life, which has big societal impact.

Manipur is at the highest rank for maximum number of HIV + people. It is our objective to rebuild our youths by realising from such activities. Life is God’s gift try to enjoy with good objective and success.

Youths should bring unity by spending time on educated debates all along the valleys and hills of Manipur. Go for your own culture, tradition, history, religion and language. Make your Identity strong; simultaneously with your personal quality as you belong to one of the indigenous people of Manipur who love Manipur. Lastly try to keep your mother language in your name, which is one of the easiest Identities to recognize.

More than 60 percent of Meetei youths keeps borrowed name from the mainland Hindi words by betraying their own meaningful words of Meetei-lon. It may be because of Pundit or Kundali who provide only Hindu names. I am quite satisfied to keep my name in our own language words. At least try to use your own language in your name, it may be a factor of your originality as you do not belong to the real Singhs and Devi’s who belong to Aryans and Dravidians.

Manipuri politicians:

They never know that Manipur is too small a state, too far away from the centre. They have very weak conversational skill to fight their right and requirements with a will power in front of other politicians of India. They have a fear psychosis as they only worry about their position and not for the people.

They love to corrupt in terms of thousands and lakhs of rupees, which is nothing when compare to the other cities of India. Think big. Have you ever think of bringing a single industry in state since you are in the Indian union. Please, stop sending backs the projects and funds which come from international and nationals.

Try to speak and write AFSPA 10,000 times with correct spelling to clear your concept as your people are shouting more than 10,000000 time since last year. Think about your originality and your own history to carry forward a good result for your society. Bring a new history of revivalism of your own nature of life with development and popularity.

Every Individual of Manipur:

Every Manipuri should know the present situation and the past with a good reason, as we have to go for a good and popular society. Like the AFSPA, with its absence of judicial remedies has resulted in rampant misbehavior, loot and rape, rising through the last two decades in Manipur. However, Manipuris came to know only at 2004 after the Manorama case. (Need to learn more about rules and regulations)

Get awareness of laws, which are legally imposed against you by AFSPA and stop saying that AFSPA is good for some reason.

However, if you respect your people and your originality ultimately no one will try to differentiate you from other human society.
