Condolence Meeting on sudden demise of Professor Naorem Sanajaoba

On the sudden demise of Professor Naorem Sanajaoba, a well-known social and human rights activist on 13th December 2009 due to a serious illness, we invite you with a deep sense of loss to a condolence meeting at SSS (II), JNU on Wednesday, the 16 December 2009 at 3 pm.

Born on 30th December 1946, Prof. Naorem Sanajaoba was one of the leading activist-intellectuals of our times who gave a rare blending of the outlook of an intellectual and the calibre of an activist in his relationship with various crucial incidents that erupted in the course of the history of democratic movements in Manipur.

Since early days of student life, he began as an activist fighting against social and political atrocity, exploitation and oppression. He was one of the leaders spearheading the 27th August movement in 1965, which led to the formation of All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU). Until his untimely demise, he had been Professor of Law, Dean in Guwahati University in Assam.

Trained in jurisprudence, Prof. Sanajaoba offered in many of his works and involvement sharp critiques of the operation of legal and political ways in which the people get oppressed and become dispossessed. His critiques and commentaries lead us to seeing the ways and possibility with which to imagine an alternative; to end and break with the regime of severe humanitarian crisis of rights in Manipur.

He had authored and edited about twenty books, including Manipur Past and Present (four volumes), Manipur Treaties and Documents, Right of the Oppressed Nations, Current Legal Essays, and Manipur Puwari: Kunmathoisuba Chahi Cha (the third revised edition of which was released on the same day of his departure), and also contributed many articles to reputed local, national and international journals and newspapers. His works critically engage with the contemporary issues of serious human right crisis in Northeast and other parts of the world.

We remember Professor Sanajaoba's effort and contribution to the spirit of the democratic politics of the 'oppressed and dispossessed' and will remain to admire his untiring courage to defend their rights with which he continued to mark his journey as defender of human rights until he left us with his untimely departure, a loss we will never be able to repair in years to come.
