Mandarin duck ('Sana Manbi') reported from Loktak Lake :: Pix - CCNCS
There is no concrete record of Mandarin duck (Aix galericulata) locally known “Sana Manbi” nganu belonging to the family of Anatidae from Manipur and particularly from Loktak Lake as per A.O .Hume’s (Birds of Manipur, Assam, Sylhet and Cacahr, 1888) and J.C. Higgins ,Game Birds and Animals of Manipur (1910-1934) except By Salim Ali from Mayang Khang of Senapati District in 1939 and from Thoubal district in 2009 which was then brought to Manipur Zoological Garden.
Even though the species has been categorized as Least Concern globally by the IUCN, Birdlife International, this is one of the rarest duck in India. For the first time with concrete scientific evidence, the species has been reported from Loktak Lake by Ornithologists and Environmentalists, Dr. Raju Kasambe, R.K. Birjit Singh of the BNHS( Bombay Natural History Society) and Center for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science (CCNCS) respectively during their research and study on the IBA’s( Important Bird Area’s of Manipur at Toubul area of Loktak lake on the 11th December,2013 in association with Wild Life Wing, Department of Forest Govt. of Manipur.
This is a great moment for all the bird watchers and lovers of Loktak Lake of Manipur.
Yours sincerely,
