Voluntary Blood Donation Camp at RGU, Arunachal Pradesh

A blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusions and/or made into biopharmaceutical medications by a process called fractionation (separation of whole-blood components). Donation may be of whole blood, or of specific components. Blood banks often participate in the collection process as well as the procedures that follow it.

Today in the developed community, most blood donors are unpaid volunteers who donate blood for a community supply. In some communities, established supplies are limited and donors usually give blood when family or friends need a transfusion. Many donors donate as an act of charity. Donors can also have blood drawn for their own future use. Donating blood is relatively safe and beneficial.

The National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is observed on 1st of October every year to share the need and importance of the blood in the life of an individual. It was first started on 1st of October in the year 1975 through the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology.

In observing the Voluntary Blood Donation process the NSS Cell, RGU along with Rajiv Gandhi University Teachers Association (RGUTA) and Rajiv Gandhi Employees Association, (RGUEA) conducted a Voluntary Blood Donation Camp in the University Campus on 5th November 2018.

Prof. Jumyir Basar, President, RGUTA along with Mr. John G. Gangmei, NSS Programme Officer, RGU formally inaugurated the camp. The camp began with a Donor Motivational Speech by Mr. Ramesh Jeke, Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti(AVYS), Arunachal Pradesh.

The main objectives of the camp were
o To make aware the donors about the importance of the voluntary blood donation.
o To successfully move towards the target of Voluntary Blood Donation to fulfill the urgent need of the needy patients.
o To facilitate the blood banks for any urgent and serious requirements.
o To promote and emphasize the self esteem of blood donors mostly the youths.
o To motivate and encourage people who are interested but need motivations in donating blood.
o To motivate the donors to donate blood voluntarily who can further motivate their relatives or friends.

Voluntary Blood Donation Camp at RGU, Arunachal Pradesh

A total of 100 donors were screened for donating blood of which 45 Units of blood were collected. Most of the donors consisted of female students which also included Male students, teaching faculties and employees of the university fraternity. This is the second successful camp which was organised in collaboration with State Blood Transfusion Council and Arunachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, Directorate of Health Services Naharlagun. Arunachal Pradesh.

The Team comprised of Dr. Passang Sona, MD Pathologist, TRIHMS, Mr. Dony Taying, Asst. Director, APSACS, Ms. Chongneithem Lhouvum, State Coordination Officer, State Blood Cell, NHM, Paramedics and Volunteers of NSS, RGU, Dept. of Sociology and Dept. of Social Work, AITS, RGU.
