"My aim is to win gold in London and I am training harder than ever. I am aware of the billion hopes I am carrying. I can't let the people of India down.

"What I am looking forward the most to is to become first woman boxer to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games," the 28-year-old Manipuri said in an interview to 'Olympic Review', the official magazine of the Games.

"At first I could not believe my ears. But when it was confirmed, I was so happy. I have won everything that could be won, but it was the Olympic gold that eluded me. Now, it's a dream coming true for me to get the chance to represent my nation at the Olympic Games when I am at the peak of my career," she said.

"On health:

I would define health as soundness, well being and good condition of the physique. Health is very important for me because it holds my strength, fitness and my professional life. And for me, it is a joy to be fit and fine.

On physical fitness:

I keep my physical fitness in check through a systematic and regular exercise routine. My daily routine consists of running early in the morning, skipping and punching and kicking the bag for ½ hour each. For my overall physical fitness, I concentrate on all areas of my body. To sharpen my skills I do a bout of sparring or 'practice fighting', which is one of the most important training methods in boxing.

"Five-time world champion boxer Mary Kom has more on her mind than just the Olympics, for which she will start training in Delhi next week. She has temporarily shut down her free boxing academy in Imphal because she could no longer sustain it amid Manipur’s economic blockade.

“There are 23 boxing students whom we train here. The idea behind the academy when I set it up was to find talent among Manipur’s poor families, the underprivileged. Boxing has done wonders for me and I was hoping for the same for them,” says Kom, at the cottage gifted by the state government after she won her first championship, and from where she runs the academy.
