Glimpses of modern day youth

Teniza Wairokpam *

I was already dying to pen down some of my crazy thoughts once again after such a long time. I'm not much of a good writer though. I just put into words what I feel, honestly. It was kinda amusing on noticing the mixed attention I got from my mates when I wrote my first article on topics that were quite a trend amongst us, teenagers.

People, say human beings.....they are like different shades of colours and never the same. But, one thing's quite obvious ........... being born (or say incarnated if you believe in such stuffs) as a Homo Sapiens in this kinda competitive world, each one of us obviously want the best of everything all for our own selfish self, don't we ? Yeah!! Of course!

But, if these competitions were just purely a blend of growing, healthy thoughts and innocent young minds, then I feel the world would've already been what's undeniably a heaven for all sorts of creatures. But again, these competitions that are ever growing into folds among us teenagers aren't quite healthy or even enlightening you know, the score's far more on the negative side.

And oh, I wouldn't dare say those negative competitions are filthy either for who am I to label stuffs as that which other folks execute and enjoy to their heart's content? Anyway, I just want you readers to ponder upon ways to curb these unhealthy competitive spirit. Hopefully, I'll give you a far deeper insight into some shocking real life happenings to aid in your readership's perspective.

It's said that women, wine and wealth are what men desire most and sadly, its true for most of the boys too. I really hate this attitude towards life (whoever put it this way!!) I hate it even more for this very notion's growing rapidly among most section of boys in our society.

Nowadays (who knows maybe since the ancient days) courting the most popular and pretty girl of one's batch raises one's status in peer groups. Your friends might have treated ya like a fly but when you own the coolest, latest cell – say iphone 6 plus or Xperia Z, there's no telling you'll be swarmed by your friends just to get some benefit from your gadget and you!

What do you do? You just let them do it, nay, you'll also ask for a favour in return. Such is the picture these days. And, as you hit the teen years, if you could own an expensive car or a bike and learn some nerve-wrecking stunts on it and say, enroll yourself in some biker association or label yourself as a part of some that gang or this gang, then your peers are sure to whisper, "Wooah! He's d COOLEST KID IN TOWN ! He does so and so ……"

Most teenage boys see it this way, huh! As if they have the unlimited licence to take everything for granted and squander all their parents' hard earned wealth on some stupid fancies.

Now, I'll tell ya about a particular Mr X who studies in Cl. – XI in a reputed school.

In an ideal XI-science class-room, filled with ideal students, well, during class hours except for breaks, the young minds must indulge themselves in stuffs related to academics. But, funny how this Mr X spends his class hours! There's the teacher OK, man, she's teaching sth, but Mr X doesn't care! Instead he's regaling his bench mates about how he would woo the girl he liked.

He goes on describing minutely from how he would dress-up to meet her and how they would go on rides together. A student of science dreaming about things as this during class hours, huh let alone dream, he's even regaling his friends with such endless stories!

Normally, on a serious day as a final exam, no normal boys or girls really care about their looks or anything except their performance on it. They usually think of sitting next to their peers so they can relax their nervousness or tension a bit with a feeling of being at home with their friends around. But this Mr X doesn't really care about silly stuffs like marks.

He happily tells his friends, " Vy, I hope I'm seated some place around lots of girls, where I can have nice views of their sweet buttocks!'' And just before the exam began when every student's shouting 'All the best' … "Best of Luck", what does our Mr X say to his friend – " oy vy! Eikhoidi nupige maning yenguragene ha!"

Hey! This isn't any fiction. This is really happening. I do hope education doesn't produce such crippled minds so young. Curious as to how I know all these stuffs. Well, I do have a story teller at home – my XI th standard bro who would chatter about his friends and other stuffs to me. There's only a year gap between us, so, its like we're pretty much together since birth. Oh boy! Am I glad to have a genuine story teller ! But of course, I advise my bro not to mix with such mentally deranged mates.

The world must surely be a crazy place. There's this Miss X in our class. She always carries a mirror with her almost everywhere everyday – in school and in tuitions. Ha ha ha ya would have a stomach ache from too much laugh if you had seen the actings she did inside class by looking at the mirror, kneeling under the desk and singing simultaneously as she did that. It was a feast for my eyes cause it was damn funny but yeah, it wasn't quite a normal stuff.

I'm a girl yeah but I don't quite understand why girls love mirror to the extent of carrying one at hand always. Even more amusing is that Miss X takes great pride in lending her mirror to any girl in need of it (As if there's a "in-need-of-it" stuff in such things ……… HaHa)

It was funnier how the mirror concealed inside a pencil box or a handkerchief or a book would be passed from one hand to another to reach its customer (as I call it ! Ha Ha) I was only too glad to be an agent and not a customer. I find this amusing and quite disgusting. There is also this Miss Y. She would always keep one lipstick, a face powder with a mirror.

Well, I wasn't able to contain my curiosity so I happened to ask her directly why she brought all that to school and did make-up at regular intervals of the day. She was taken aback but she did tell me that she was very obsessed with looking good and wanna make sure that she's pretty made-up to meet that up. Yuck! Yuck! I do like her as a friend but nope, I'm never gonna buy her obsession of such stuffs.

Let's say I've got a 50-50 outlook towards today's teens. And,I just gave you only an insight into some amusing teenaged lives. I won't spoil your perspective by telling what to learn or correct from such stuffs.

Well, the choice is all yours either go mad influenced by these amusing teens or join in a whole new virtual revolution aimed to put a stop to such dirty stuffs. Honestly for me, I'm pained to have notice and to have experienced all sorts of weird stuffs first hand. But yeah, I feel lucky for I have, at least, become more cautious and more thoughtful.

I'm not very pleased with today's teen society coz all they ever care seriously (in general, you know, the gossips and all) its just about making pairs one boy one girl. It's harder nowadays for any girl or a boy to remain just friends because of some filmy, cheesy gossips (and even if he or she doesn't wanna remain that way, its their problem.

It isn't some spicy news for others to gossip). And, I do wish we don't judge books by covers too, and we don't criticize any not-so-good looking girl or boy for sth he or she can't help (as said by Hazlitt) Don't we all know that better, huh??
