Admission to Ph.D. Programme for Academic Year 2013–2014

The Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati is an autonomous R&D institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India. The institute is engaged in frontier areas of research in the specific domain of Physical, Chemical, Mathematical and Biological Sciences. The institute’s aim is to contribute to basic sciences and develop technology within its defined domain using local resources. The institute emphasises on strong interdisciplinary Ph.D. programme across different divisions. Institute is equipped with modern and sophisticated instrumentation including SEM, XRD, LCMS-MS, AFM, DNA Sequencer and computational facility for cutting edge scientific research.

The institute invites applications for its Ph.D. programme in the areas of basic and industrial applications of plasma, pure and applied mathematics, statistics, nanochemistry and polymer sciences, microbial biodiversity, beneficial microorganisms–macroorganisms (plant/animal) interactions and non-conventional energy resources. Selected candidates shall be eligible for the monthly stipend and annual contingency. Annual contingency grant will be higher than that of normal fellowship programme of other R&D institutes. The process of admission to the Ph.D. programme will start in 1st week of September 2013. A written test will be conducted for the applicants and the shortlisted candidates will have to appear interview on the next day. Candidates who have qualified CSIR-UGC-NET/DBT-JRF/ICMR-JRF/ICAR-JRF examination are eligible for direct interview.

Eligibility: Candidates shall be eligible for admission and registration for the ongoing programme of research at IASST leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), if he/she has obtained 55% marks in aggregate (B or B+ only in the 10 point scale) in the Master’s degree examination. A candidate belonging to SC/ST who has obtained 50% marks in aggregate in Master degree examination shall be eligible for admission and registration.

Selection procedure: If numbers of CSIR-UGC NET/DBT-JRF/ICMR-JRF/ICAR-JRF qualified applicants are more than the available Ph.D. positions, selection will be based on only interview with the NET/JRF qualified candidates.

Selected candidates will be informed to join the Ph.D. programme of IASST within a week time from the date of announcement of result.
Candidates are requested to refer to the institute’s website www.iasst.gov.in for application form and Ph.D. notifications.

Application procedure: Application should be typed on A4-size plain paper in the prescribed format. Applications sent by e-mail with scan copy of required enclosures will also be accepted and should be sent to [email protected]. Each page of the typed application form should be signed by the candidate. No application fee will be charged by the institute.

Applications should be accompanied by attested copies of certificates and mark sheets mentioning the division obtained. Two recent passport size photographs should be enclosed. One of these should be signed by the candidate and pasted on the application form. The candidates must provide their mobile number and correct e-mail address as most of the correspondence will be done by these media. Incomplete applications and those received after the closing date will not be entertained. The decisions of the admission committee will be final and binding and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard.

Results of written test and interview will be available in IASST website www.iasst.gov.in and all correspondence must be done through IASST e-mail [email protected]. Hard copy of the duly filled applications should be sent to The Registrar, Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Paschim Boragaon, Garchuk, Guwahati 781 035, so as to reach on or before 30 August 2013.

Date of written test is 6 September 2013 (Friday) and interview on 7 September 2013 (Saturday).

3) National Workshop on Botanical Identification and Evaluation of Indian Medicinal Plants

Taxonomic identification of medicinal plants is very much essential for proper identity of the plant species, which helps to maintain the uniform chemical sanctity of the secondary metabolites. The shifting paradigm towards chemo profiling of natural products is essential for drug discovery and development. The main focus of the workshop will be on the crucial and contemporary issues on identification of medicinal plants; so much so their evaluation on different aspects of taxonomical, phytochemical, pharmacological evaluation and others.

Advertisement for the Post of JRF

Applications are invited for one position of Junior Research Fellow, in a research project entitled ‘Water Quality, Surface and Groundwater Hydrology of Kovvada Site’ at Department of Chemistry, P.R. Govt College (A), Kakinada 533 001, AP.

The project is funded by Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. The fellowship is co-terminous with the project for two years with emoluments of Rs 16,000 p.m. along with applicable HRA.

Qualifications: The applicant should have qualification M.Sc. (Chemistry)/M.Tech. (Environmental Engineering). Candidates having GATE/NET qualification with interest to pursue Ph.D. will be preferred.
