BRIC-IBSD organised programme for developing women entrepreneurship
Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), an institute under the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC), Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India organized a programme on “Bioeconomy from Bioresources:Developing Women Entrepreneurship” at Imphal.
The programme was addressed by The Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, Ms. Anusuiya Uikey as Chief Guest and distributed machines & other accessories to various women entrepreneurs from different parts of Imphal. The Hon’ble Governor appreciated the research activities and various initiatives of IBSD for the promotion of bioresources of NER for the development of bioeconomy of the region.
She applauded different activities of IBSD in thrust areas for the promotion and development of bioresources including phytopharmaceutical mission, ethnopharmacology, traditional healthcare, wild mushrooms & insects, traditional fermented foods, medicinal plants resources, huge microbial resources on which IBSD is working. She mentioned that IBSD is working for women entrepreneurship development through various scientific interventions, skill development programmes and outreach activities in NER.
She appreciated the activities under BioNEST incubator for the development of women bioentrepreneurship through Orchids floriculture in Meghalaya. Shecongratulated IBSD for taking such initiatives for the development of women entrepreneurs in the state of Manipur.
Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director, IBSD delivered the welcome address and highlighted about the research and outreach activities performed by the Institute for the development bioeconomy from bioresources.
He highlighted several bioresources of NER which are being explored by IBSD for documentation, scientific evaluation and development of products/ processes/ technologies. He highlighted that IBSD is working on phytopharmaceutical mission for ethnobotany and ethnopharmacological perspectives of medicinal plants including their cultivation, promotion, value addition and chemical profiling, and promotion of start-ups based on development of herbal medicinal products.
IBSD is exploring microbial resources from different ecological niches of NE India viz., cave ecosystem, forest ecosystem, fermented food, endophytes, hot-spring, cold spring, lime stone deposits, high altitude ecosystems and preserved at the microbial repository centre of IBSD, Imphal. This repository is unique with huge collection of microbes from NER, which can play as a potential lead for not only new drug development but also very effective for the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) study.
IBSD is also exploring wild edible mushrooms of NER for nutraceutical potential and AMR study.IBSD has documented large number of indigenous traditional knowledge associated with traditional fermented foods of NER. IBSD has developed starter culture consortium and controlled fermentation process for safe, quality, and healthy products.
BRIC-IBSD organised programme for developing women entrepreneurship
Prof. Mukherjee highlighted that IBSD is involved in a number of outreach activities to ensure that the fruits of its research reach the common people of this region. IBSD has established a BioNEST incubator for the development of women bioentrepreneurs through Orchid floriculture and benefited more than 100 women in Meghalaya.
IBSD is organising many outreach activities for farmers, traditional healers, women entrepreneurs of NER to promote “Bioeconomy from Bioresources”, programmes for promoting local bioresources among school/ college students of NER. In this context, IBSD has organized International Bioresource Conclave to showcase the different bioresources, local traditional medicines of NER, participated in G20 event on Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering (RIIG) for “Circular Bio-economy” to highlight the various initiatives of the institute for the promotion of bioresources and development of Bioeconomy of NER.
Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Imphal highlighted various opportunities to explore the bioresources of NER. He appreciated the efforts of IBSD for all the initiatives taken for the development of bioeconomy from bioresources. He highlighted that CAU and IBSD can work together to explore local bioresources of the region.
Shri Hungyo Worshang, IAS, Secretary, Science & Technology, Govt. of Manipur appreciated this initiative of IBSD for the development of women entrepreneurs in this region. He mentioned that women are integral part of our society and playing important role in connecting societies and communities in NER. He highlighted various initiatives of Govt. of Manipur where organizations like IBSD and CAU can contribute for the development of bioeconomy.
During the event, Shri Biswadeep Gupta, MD, KRC Foundation along with other women entrepreneurs expressed their views and thank The Hon’ble Governor of Manipur & Director IBSD for proving support and necessary skill development. During the event, more than 150 women from different parts of Imphal participated. The programme was also attended by scientists, scholars, officers, staffs from IBSD and other institutes/ state organizations.
