York is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the UK. Situated almost exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh on the East Coast mainline, intercity trains provide fast and frequent connections to the two cities. Despite these attractive features, the cost of living is much lower than that in London and the south of England. The Department of Economics at the University of York is one of the largest and most research active Economics Departments in the UK. It offers a vibrant PhD programme in Economics with, in 2012/13, some 50 students enrolled on the programme from 25 different countries.

PhD students in York benefit from close integration into research activities through the research clusters in
o Applied Microeconometrics
o Econometrics
o Experimental Economics
o Health Econometrics and Data
o Historical Economics and Related Research
o Macroeconomics/Finance
o Microeconomic Theory

and close cooperation with a number of associated research centres at the University such as the internationally renowned Centre for Health Economics.

The PhD programme offers both PhD level courses and also specialist lectures given by visiting scholars. For 2013/14 we are planning an enhanced PhD level course structure with four core courses (in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Applied Econometrics and Mathematics) and three more specialised courses (in General Equilibrium, Quantitative Macroeconomics and Health Econometrics). We are part of the White Rose Social Science Doctoral Training Centre (WR DTC) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) which provides a range of research and training related activities in the field of social sciences.

Various PhD studentships are available for October 2013 entry:
o Two WR DTC ESRC studentships for any field in Economics
o Four WR DTC ESRC studentships in Advanced Quantitative Methods, in particular for the analysis of applied economic problems with large scale data. These awards are filled in open competition within the White Rose Social Science Doctoral Training Centre.
o Four Studentships of the Department of Economics for any field in Economics

The ESRC studentships offer full fees and maintenance grants for three years (+3) or four years (1+3) according to ESRC statutes. Studentships funded by the Department of Economics have a value of GBP 15K per year for three years and may also be awarded as part funding. There is the opportunity to generate additional income, typically up to GBP 2K per year, through teaching in the Department.

The deadline for studentship applications is 01 February 2013. Applications for the Departmental Studentships can also be submitted later but applications may not be considered by the selection panel if all awards are already filled. Applicants for the ESRC awards will be informed by the University of York about the outcome of their application. Applicants for Departmental studentships are informed by the Department of Economics about the outcome of their application. We are expecting to have a final decision by July 2013.
