The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" is a programme initiated by the Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim of the programme is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research. This programme strives to assist the students to realise their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is tapped for research and development in the country. Generous scholarships will be provided (up to the pre-Ph.D. level) to the selected students. In addition, summer programmes in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country will be organized and preferential access to libraries, laboratories,museums etc. will be provided.

Funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, the programme is administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, through the Society for Innovation and Development (IISc Campus). Selections for Basic Sciences,Engineering and Medicine Streams will be carried out by IISc, IIT Bombay, and ICMR (New Delhi), respectively. There are special groups or committees set up at IISc, IIT and ICMR whichdo the screening of applications, conduct interviews at various centres, make the final selection and attend to follow-up matters.In this matter ICMR functions in association with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh(PGIMER).

The Department of Science and Technology - the nodal agency of the Government concerned with the implementation of the scheme - has entrusted the overall responsibility for organising the scheme to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and set up a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for overseeing its implementation. IISc, which administers the programme through the Society for Innovation and Development has provided necessary infrastructural support; it has also set up a group with responsibility for all matters related to NAC meetings, planning, advertisement, application forms - design, printing, dispatch, overall budget, finance and administration of all fellowships.

Basic Sciences (Up to 120 fellowships)
Stream SA: Students completing X Standard in 2003:
Having a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Science subjects in X Standard Board Examination and enrolling for Plus 2 level with Science subjects.

Stream SB: Students joining I year Science undergraduate programme in 2003:
Having a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination and intending to pursue an undergraduate B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. programme in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics/Statistics or Biological Sciences (with one of these subjects as a major subject or with all Science subjects as majors having equal weightage) or B.Math./B.Stat.

Stream SC: Students completing I year Science undergraduate programme in 2003:
Having a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination and enrolled in B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. programme in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics/Statistics or Biological Sciences (with one of these subjects as a major subject or with all Science subjects as majors having equal weightage) or B.Math./B.Stat.

Olympiad
Students who represent India in the International Olympiads in Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Biology in 2003 will automatically qualify for the Fellowship, provided they complete their X Standard Board Examination by 2003 and pursue studies in Science subjects.

Engineering ( Up to 25 fellowships)

Stream EA: Students joining I year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. in 2003:
Having a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination and joining I year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch.

Stream EB: Students entering II year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. in 2003:
Having a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination and having I class or equivalent in the first year examination of B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch.

Medicine (Up to 25 fellowships)

Stream MA: Students joining II year M.B.B.S. in 2003:
Having a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination and enrolled in M.B.B.S programme, in 2002 and passing the first Professional Examination (with Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology) in first attempt on or before 30th September 2003.

Each stream has a different application form. Students who wish to apply for the Fellowship in both Basic Sciences and Engineering must submit separate requisitions. Each requisition must clearly indicate the stream applied for (eg. SA, SB, SC, EA, EB AND MA) and must be accompanied by a DD for Rs.75/- drawn in favour of SID A/c KVPY payable at Bangalore along with two self addressed labels (2"X4" size) by 2nd June, 2003 to:
