Nehru Yuva Kendras observe National Sports Day

Nehru Yuva Kendra, Imphal East and Thoubal today observed National Sports Day in a befitting manner on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary National hockey player who won gold medal for India in the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games.
NYK Imphal East observed the day in the presence of M Ongbi Surbala Devi, Pradhan of Top Dusera Gram Panchayat (TDGP) Imphal East; L Ongbi Bina Devi, Member (TDGP); Th Ongbi Angoubi Leima, Member (TDGP) and Kh Ibohanbi Singh, district coordinator, NYK Imphal East as presidium members, said a press release of NYK, Imphal East.
Major Dhyan Chand who scored more than 400 goals in his career from 1926 to 1948 and carved his niche in international hockey arena and served his country well in reaching the pinnacle of glory multiple times, was fondly remembered on the occasion.
Mention may be made that the highest award for lifetime achievement in games and sports (The Major Dhyan Chand Award) is named in honour of the legendary player.
About 200 youth players and students attended the observation, the release continued.
NYK , Thoubal also observed the National Sports Day jointly with Phoudel Youth Club, Phoudel at Phoudel playground in the presence of Saphura, Councillor, Thoubal Municipal Council (TMC); Y Laksman Singh, District Youth Coordinator, NYK Thoubal; Abem, Member TMC; K Lokendro Singh, DACYP member, NYK, Thoubal and Md Akbar, president, Phoudel Youth Club as presidium members, a statement of NYK, Thoubal said.
Briefing about the programme, Ak Rakesh Singh, National Youth Volunteer, NYK Thoubal stressed on the importance of sportsmanship in the Nation Building Process referring Padma Bhusan Awardee, Major Dhyan Chand.
Chief Guest of the function, Saphura also spoke about the importance of the day and appreciated NYK Thoubal for organising such programme and other activities for the local youths regularly.
Saphura and Y Laksman also distributed sports materials to Phoudel Youth Clubs, it continued.
