Babysana's last rites on Dec 28

Imphal, December 15 2019: The JAC formed in connection with the death of Ningthoujam Babysana has announced that Babysana's last rites will be performed on December 28, now that the case has been taken up by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) .

Speaking to media persons at THAU complex today, the JAC convenor Laishram Gyaneshwori said that following the announcement made by the father of the deceased to refrain from performing Babysana's last rites until her case was handed over to the CBI, the JAC has also been making sure that no entertainment activities and functions are held in Thangmeiband till date.

Expressing gratitude to the people of Thangmeiband for supporting the JAC, Gyaneshwori announced that the last rites of the deceased student will be held on December 28.She then said that even though the ban on entertainment events and festivities was initially planned to be lifted only after the said day (December 28), the JAC has decided to relax the ban from tomorrow (December 16) in light of the coming Gan-Ngai and Christmas festivals.

It may be recalled that Ningthoujam Babysana of Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai, was found hung to death inside the hostel of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School in the morning of July 18.Alleging foul play and demanding justice for the student and for the case to be handed over to the CBI, the public, CSOs, student organisations etc launched intense protests numerous times.

Following an appeal filed by the father of Babysana alleging involvement of sexual assault in the death, the High Court of Manipur issued a directive ordering the CBI to handle the case.

Pointing out that almost half of the JAC's demands have now been fulfilled following the High Court's order, Gyaneshwori informed that CBI, Kolkata, began submitting their first report by filing a regular FIR at CJM Court concerned of Manipur on December 5 .

A three member team of the CBI, led by a DSP, will begin the investigation at the earliest, she added.
