Imphal, May 04 2015 :
A discussion on the unconstructive outcome of Mapithel Dam was held at Khuman Lampak Youth Hostel here on Monday.
It was jointly organised by the Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organisation (MDAVO) and JAC on Mapithel Dam Downstream & Affected People (JACMDD & AP) .
A resource person at the discourse, Human Rights Initiative, Manipur (HRI) secretary W Joykumar informed that the Irrigation & Flood Control Department (IFCD) has blocked the water flow of Thoubal river for carrying on the construction of the Mapithel Dam.
"Due to the ongoing construction of the dam, also known as Thoubal river multipurpose project, a number of villages nearby were submerged by the overflowed river water.
And many more villages which fall within these areas will be submerged soon," he said.
This mega dam is also known as Thoubal Multipurpose Project.
The Kukis calls it Maphou Dam while the Nagas name it Mapithel dam.
"Almost all the villagers live on Thoubal river by mining sand and fishing and farming," Joykumar said.
He cautioned that a large area of forest land will also be immersed in the dam water soon.
"We need to take up sustained agitation over the dam construction," he said.
K Tentenba of JACMDD & AP, I Pratap of North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) and TS Roshan of MDAVO attended the discussion programme as presidium members.
