Eurasian Curlew

The Eurasian Curlew or Common Curlew has been photographed for the first time in the State while feeding at the wetlands of Lamphelpat, Imphal West.
Irom Lawrence, member, Wildlife Explorers Manipur snapped the migratory bird, known scientifically as Numenius arquata.
The Eurasian Curlew was spotted for the first time in some areas of Keibul Lamjao National Park in 2001, according to "Checklist of Birds of Manipur" authored by K Jugeshwor and published by the Forest Department, Government of Manipur.
The migratory bird was then detected for the second time on April 3, 2024 around 4 pm at Lamphelpat wetlands, after a gap of 23 years.
It was subsequently photographed for the first time by Irom Lawrence.
In this connection, Elangbam Premjit, secretary, Wildlife Explorers Manipur shared that this wading bird is classified in the Near Threatened (NT) category globally as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) .
He further urged the concerned authority to identify the Lamphelpat wetlands as an Important Bird Area (IBA) as many species of threatened migratory birds feed here.
