Under the theme 'Unite, invest to prevent violence against women and girls', the annual 16-day activism on violence against women kicked off at Peace Ground, Churachandpur on Friday.
Orchestrated by the Women of Lamka, the event served as a fervent call for justice and a poignant outcry against the distressing instances of gender-based violence that have plagued the state of Manipur.
Around 5,000 women belonging to Kuki-Zomi-Hmar and Mizo communities including leaders of Zomi Mothers' Association (ZMA), Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights KWOHR) and Hmar Women Union congregated at Peace Ground from 11 am to join the opening day of the 16 days' activism.
Women leaders talked about hardships faced by Kuki-Zomi-Hmar women in the aftermath of the present violence.
Highlighting the essence of the 16 day activism campaign, KWOHR president Ngaineikim said that this year's theme 'Unite, invest to prevent violence against women and girls' calls upon citizens to demonstrate their commitment to end violence against women and girls by sharing actions for a world free from violence and atrocities.
She alleged that tribal community belonging to Kuki-Zomi-Hmar-Mizo have been subjected to most horrific mob violence, sexual assault and even murder in the initial phase of the ethnic conflict.
