FoH condemns life bid on Kom social activist

Imphal, April 08 2024: Terming it as an act of terrorism, Federation of Hao-mee (FoH) has strongly condemned the life attempt on social activist Asong Kom by armed Kukis and demanded stringent actions against the perpetrators.

In a release, FoH general secretary Y Shyam Khuman recounted that Asong Kom, who is also the PRO of champion pugilist Mary Kom, was stopped by armed Kukis at Turing Phaisen Kom village on March 30 around 4 pm while he was returning from Churachandpur DC office and heading towards Sagang.

As Asong Kom feared for his life when the armed Kukis asked him to put the hands behind his head, he jumped into a gorge and suffered injuries in an attempt to evade the murder attempt.

The armed Kukis opened fire at him, but missed Asong, who then hid in a Hmar village before being rescued by police and army in the evening.

According to Shyam, the armed persons labelled Asong Kom as an informer of Meetei armed groups.

While recounting a similar incident of assaulting Manipur Kom Union president Ahao Kom by Kuki militants (KIA) last year, Shyam said that Kukis continue to disrupt activities of Ichum Kom village chief and oppress the innocent villagers.

While condemning atrocities committed by Kukis on indigenous Kom community, the general secretary demanded the government to take action against those involved in the murder attempt of Asong Kom.
