Imphal, August 29 2022:
Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) chairman Jenchui Kamei has extended greetings to the people on occasion of the 91st Jadonang Martyr's Day observance on Monday.
In this regard, Zenchui said that the British regarded Haiphou Jadonang as a freedom fighter.
Jadonang stood up against the British for Makam Lei (people of this land) when the latter tried to take over the land.
His fight against the British has been termed as Naga Revolt or Naga Raj.
Zenchui continued that the term 'Zeliangrong' came about after some scholars and writers named the movement as Zeliangrong movement.
Jadonang's movement was for the people of the land and he (Jadonang) proclaimed that the region will be ruled by 'Makam Lei' in the future while the British rule will come to an end.
This led to his arrest and eventually his death on August 29, 1931.His death led the movement to break out from Makam region and spread out to other Naga communities.
It also saw the emergence of another freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu and set off the complete Zeliangrong political movement.
The ZUF chairman then contended that one must never neglect our history of fighting for our freedom, for independence is a right given from birth.
Thus, the Front has given up the happiness of loving families and a peaceful life to fight for this freedom, he said and stated that time has come for the people to come together to see to the formation of a homeland for Zeliangrong people.
