New Delhi, January 31 2014 :
An Arunachal Pradesh MLA's son, a student of Lovely Professional University was allegedly beaten to death by local residents in Lajpat Nagar market, South Delhi in the evening of January 29, after an altercation.
19 year old Nido Tainam hailed from Arunachal Pradesh and is the son of Nido Pavitra, a Congress MLA and Parliamentary Secretary in Health and Family Welfare Dept.
Talking to The Sangai Express Robin Hibu, Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police (Trg), said that three suspects have been detained and an FIR No.47/2014 under 302 IPC and Section 3 (sub section 10) of Prevention of Atrocities Against ST/SC Act has been registered at Lajpat Nagar police station.
The senior police officer further said that the viscera will be sent to the CBI on priority basis and added that the investigation is being monitored by senior police officers.
Meanwhile, students and NE communities in Delhi are planning to hold a demonstration to condemn the incident and demand a stop to racial attacks towards the Northeastern communities.
According to sources from his friends and witnesses, Tainam and his friends were looking for an address in the area and went to a sweet shop.
An argument and fight erupted when a local in the shop made a comment on his hair.
Reports also claimed that Nido got into a scuffle after he was subjected to racial slur and teased about the colour of his hair.
After the scuffle, where a group of about eight locals gathered and started thrashing him up, the police arrived and took them to the police station and reportedly dropped them back again at the same place where the incident took place.
The locals again beat him up where Tainam was seriously injured and was later taken to AIIMS where he succumbed to his injury the next day, on January 30 .
According to JT Tagan, president of the Arunachal Students' Union in Delhi, the shopkeeper and some people present at the shop teased Taniam over the colour of his hair.
Irked, Taniam broke a glass item in the shop, for which he later paid Rs 7,000, he said while talking to a TV channel.
An altercation broke out and the youth, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, was allegedly beaten up with sticks and iron rods.
He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, Tagan said.
According to official sources from Arunachal Bhawan, Post mortem has been conducted and the cause of the death is yet to be ascertained.
"Prima Facie the cause of death is due to injury in the head and chest.
We are sending the body for embalmment today and will be sent to Arunachal Pradesh tomorrow morning," said Gethartha Barua , Information Officer of Arunachal Bhawan.
"We are investigating the case," a PTI report quoted a senior police official as saying.
Activist Bina Lakshmi was quoted by a TV Channel of describing it as a "racial attack" and saying a group of North-east students would protest in Lajpat Nagar tomorrow.
"After the Khirki incident, people from North-East have been feeling scared.
He broke a window...
that does not mean six people should thrash him.
Why did the police drop him back to that place and not where he lives?" Ms Lakshmi questioned.
The incident has triggered outrage on social media.
Angry tweets were directed at Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government, which has been criticised for its policy of encouraging people to catch corrupt officers and for standing by a Minister, Somnath Bharti, who had conducted a vigilante-style "raid" in Khirki Extension in his constituency, targeting African nationals on the suspicion that they were involved in a drugs and sex racket.
