Imphal, September 21 2021:
Lamyanba Irabot Ningshing Thouram Observation Committee (LINTOC) and Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) remembered Lamyanba Irabot by offering floral tributes to statue of Lamyanba Irabot on Tuesday.
According to a statement of LINTOC, September month is very important in the history of Manipur.
It was on September 21, 1949 that king Bodhchandra signed the merger agreement at Shillong under duress thereby making Manipur a part of India forcibly.
This important day also coincides with the public meet held at MDU against the proposal of creating Purvanchal Pradesh by clubbing Manipur, Tripura, Cachar and Lushai Hills together.
An incident that occurred at Pungdongbam on this day in 1948 forced Lamyanba Hijam Irabot to go underground and launch an armed revolutionary movement for the first time for restoration of Manipur's freedom.
The day is also birth and death day of Hijam Irabot.
People's leader Hijam Irabot might have different facets but his overall identity was the sacrifice he made for bringing a change in the society and for a better nation by standing against British colonialism, king's supreme rule and human rights violation.
Apart from enlightening people by writing poems and essays, Irabot was also the first person to bring out journal and hand written newspaper to share his thought with the people.
Even during the time of British colonialism and king's supreme administration, Manipur was a nation with self-sufficiency in food production and hardworking people.
However, Manipur society has now been deeply degraded, fully dependent on others and unable to stand, the statement said, adding that time has come for everyone in Manipur to save themselves from the jaws of death without any fear and "shoulder responsibility for saving the society.
The statement further said that contemporary Manipuri society has lesser number of people who could sacrifice for the nation fearlessly as personal interests are put in the forefront of everything and the habit of joining people's movement for namesake only is increasing day by day.
Having learnt this lesson, government has now started a policy to spontaneously subside any public movement and this is being witnessed more frequently than ever in the past couple of years, the statement said and stressed the need for following the footsteps of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot with a collective effort to bring a better and egalitarian society.
