SHRI observes Organ Donation Day

Imphal, August 13 2025:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) observed World Organ Donation Day 2025 on Wednesday at its Langol auditorium, raising awareness about ofgan donation and sharing insights into transplantation practices.
Dr Guliver Potsangbam, consultant nephrologist, delivered the keynote address, highlighting how a single organ donor can save up to eight lives.
He outlined SHRI's milestones: 119 kidney transplants (as of August 2025), Northeast India's first ABO-incompatible transplant (October 2021), the region's fitst deceased-donor transplant (August 2023), Tripura's first renal transplant (July 2024), and 137 corneal transplants (as of July 2025).The hospital also conducts over 130 daily dialysis sessions, with plans to expand capacity.
Dr Somorendro Paonam, consultant urologist, spoke on "Kidney Transplants at Shija Hospitals", while Dr Sachindra Laishram, consultant ophthalmologist, focussed on "Cornea Transplants" .
Laishram Monica Devi (MOHAN Foundation) presented on "The Journey of Deceased Organ Donation" .
Chief guest Dr Chambo Gonmei, director of Health Services (Manipur), stressed strengthening the state's organ donation system.
Guests of honour Dr K Vikram Singh and Dr N Shugeta Devi emphasised public awareness and institutional collaboration.
Dr Shugeta noted that Shija Hospitals performed 119 of Manipur'sl87 renal transplants, significantly contributing to the state's programme.
Around 100 healthcare professionals attended.
Dr Palin Khundongbam, chairman & MD, highlighted the heed for medical expertise, community engagement, and supportive policies.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Mahele Maharabam.
