Imphal, November 04 2015:
For the first time in Manipur, SKY Hospital Imphal performed a CTO-Coronary Angioplasty to Ruwangshang (65), of Chandel district on October 27 .
Ruwangshang has been suffering from CTO (Chronic Total Occlusion) with 100% blockage involving 50 mm long proximal segment of Left Anterior Descending (LAD) artery of the heart.
For such long segment CTO heart operation with By-Pass Graft (CABG) is usually required but Ruwangshang did not want heart operation and opted for Balloon angioplasty with stent.
The complex coronary angioplasty was performed, first by crossing the CTO with a special strong metallic guidewire.
The lumen of the artery was initially dilated using a smaller balloon (1.5 mm diameter).
The size of the arterial lumen was gradually increased by inflating slightly bigger balloon (2.5 mm diameter) to allow the stents to go in.
Finally, 2 Drug Eluting Stents (DES) overlapping each other were deployed which completely opened up the obstruction and covered the full length of the obstructed segment, restoring normal blood flow through the affected artery using the state of the Art Philips Cath Lab with Stentboost Technology.
CTO angioplasty is performed in only selected Heart Institutes across the world as the success rate is low and complication rate is high as compared to non-CTO coronary angioplasty.
SKY Hospital now joins the club of those premier heart hospitals doing such complex coronary angioplasty.
Dr L Shyamkishore, Chief Cardiologist and Chairman who led the team expressed his happiness on the outcome of the procedure and pledged that SKY Hospital will provide such procedures/operation (Coronary Angioplasty/PCI) free of cost along with free hospital charge (from admission to discharge) for BPL families and senior citizens of Manipur and other North East States of India.
