Imphal, April 16 2015 :
Singjamei-Kongba road was blocked by protestors on Thursday over the death of RK Diamond of Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai in Imphal East.
The 20-year-old youth was found dead in the courtyard of one of his friends named Hidangmayum Rocky, the main accused in the murder case, at Khongman Zone-II in the district on April 14 morning.
Since the early morning a large number of protestors enforced the road blockade.
They burned tyres and put logs on the Singjamei-Kongba road as part of a day-long Singjamei area general strike called by the joint action committee (JAC) which has been fighting for justice in the alleged murder case.
At about 1 pm, the angry demonstrators gathered and marched towards the residence of the accused but a large number of police commando personnel from Irilbung Police Station and Imphal East arrived at the scene and stopped them and foiled the attempt.
The police fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the protestors, resulting in a standoff between the two sides.
The protestors retaliated the police action with volley of stones and catapult pebbles.
Three persons including the mother and the sister of the deceased teenager had fainted during the skirmish.
They were rushed to JNIMS.
Confrontation with the police and the stone-throwing protestors engaged in a sporadic fight till evening.
But no casualties were reported in the protracted confrontation.
JAC convenor Ksh Thoiba told reporters at the protest site that Diamond was murdered and pledged that the committee would not claim the body until the Government books all the culprits.
He pledged to continue the agitation until all the culprits are brought to justice.
In an unrelated incident, a sit-in protest was staged at the Tharoijam Maning Leikai community hall under Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West over the missing of a 15-year-old boy.
Thangjam Suresh, son of Th Surjamani of Tharoijam Maning Leikai has gone missing since March 22 last.
He had left home to visit the house of one Tongbram Tiken (35), a truck driver from Lanjing Achouba in Inmphal West, according to his father.
The father said his missing son was working with Tiken as his helper a month ago.
A missing report was lodged at Patsoi Police Station by the family.
The truck driver was also summoned by the police for questioning in the case.
However, his whereabouts is still unknown, the father said.
He also urged the authorities to take action against driver Tiken in connection with the case.
