Imphal, May 03 2023:
While stating that no one can deny that Meetei/ Meitei is an indigenous community and reminding all concerned that government of India gives constitutional protection to safeguard indigenous communities by enlisting them in the ST list, Salaai Kanba Lup (SKL) has asserted that it would be wrong to interfere in the demand of Meetei/Meitei for inclusion in ST list.
In a release, SKL joint secretary L Kangleicha Kha Ngan-ba informed that the Meiteis are demanding their rightful demand of constitutional protection from the Union government.
However, it is unfortunate that some groups are interfering in the demands, he contended.
Kangleicha further expressed apprehension that the other indigenous communities may also disappear if Meitei/ Meetei goes extinct.
Meanwhile, Sports Association Ningthoukhong (SAN) general secretary P Ibochouba Singh in a release pointed out that a total area of Manipur is hill and every district in Manipur has hill areas.
Out of the areas, the government should protect the reserved forest areas and wild life sanctuaries, he continued, while suggesting that the government verify all those indulging in illegal activities as the hills too are under the jurisdiction of the state.
