Imphal, January 31 2014 :
Chief Minister O Ibobi has pointed out that some of the most challenging environmental problems are directly linked with the production, transportation, storage and usage of energy.
Issuing a message in connection with the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight observed every year from the 15th to the 31st of January under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ibobi said to have sustainable energy system the resources are not to be exhausted before regeneration.
However, modern lifestyle is based on the consideration of comfort, quality, safety and easy availability of a product.
Hence, today's civilization is fast depleting the resources which have been formed through a gradual process over millions of years, he stated.
India, in the scheme of world petrol industry, is classified as "Price takers" which means we have no control over the price of Oil barrel so; we have to take it or leave it.
In India as we are able to meet only 28% of the total energy demand, the rest comes through exports which have been burden on the exchequer, Ibobi also said.
According to him, the Government of India, considering the above issues set up the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) which functions as a think tank to the Government for proposing policies and strategies on Petroleum Conservation through mass media campaigns, printed literature, seminars and training programmes.
"In Manipur we have faced the fuel scarcity situations more than any other states in the country.
The future of our children may not be very different if we consider that the fuel resources of today are expected to be over by 2016.The unconventional or renewable sources of energy will be the only option left which are yet to attain commercial viability as of now.
Hence the need for fuel conservation cannot be emphasized.
The Government and the oil industry can create awareness among the masses to implement them in their daily life," Ibobi stated.
As a thumb rule 1 unit of electricity saved equals to 3 units of electricity produced.
With this in mind let us follow the above simple steps so that we may contribute our bit to the larger cause of oil and gas conservation.
Remember "Save Oil means Save Money means Saving the Environment" .
