Bodies celebrate Language Day, DESAM greets

All Manipur Students' Union celebrated Manipuri Language day at its head office multi-purpose hall on Friday.
The celebration was attended by Manipur University former vice chancellor in-charge Professor S Sanatombi Singha, AMSU president Haobijam Chalamba Meitei and MU associate professor Dr Chirom Raj Ketan as presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, Chalamba recalled that several organisations launched intense movements for 40 years to include Manipuri language in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution.
During that movement, AMSU as a students' organisation took active roles and the movement finally succeeded with the formal recognition of Manipuri language on August 20, 1992.Commemorating the day, August 20 is being observed as Manipuri language day every year, he continued, while highlighting the need to remember and pay respect to those elders who struggled for inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th schedule.
Their sacrifices were the only reason for the recognition of Manipuri language, he reiterated and stressed that contemporary generation should contribute their mite towards further enrichment of Manipuri language.
Manipuri Literary Association (MALA), Jiribarn also celebrated Manipuri Language Day with itchairman F Ahmed and advisor retired prof K Basana Singh as the presidium members.
Biren Khuman, who was the convenor of the then Manipuri Language Demand Co-ordinating Committee Jiri, delivered the key note address of the event.
Writers' Association Kakching also celebrated the 75th Independence Day apart from organising the "Manipur Language Day" at the residence of Mayanglambam Shyam in Kakching Makha Lou Irum Ningthou Pareng on Friday.
The celebration was attended by Association advisor retired ZEO Pukhrambam Nimai as chief guest and vice president Naorem Amuyaima Singh as president.
Later, Naorem Amuyaima spoke about his opinion on Azadi ka Mahotsav while Pukhrambam Nimai delivered a speech on "Manipuri Language Day".
While extending greetings on the occasion of 30th Manipuri Language Day, the Democratic Students' Alliance Manipur (DESAM) has called upon the people of the state to join hands in promoting Manipuri language and scripts.
In a statement, DESAM said that it has been 30 years since Manipuri language was grant ed recognition under the 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution and Meetei Mayek has replaced Bengali script in Manipuri subject up to the Masters' level thereby signifying that the efforts of the forefathers and contemporary language/script activists have not gone wasted.
Maintaining that language and script are identities of a community and a civilisation, DESAM opined that there is continuous need for the government, organisations as well as every individual to strive for promoting Manipuri language and script before the world.
It further called upon the people of the state to follow the footsteps of the forefathers and activists, who dedicated their lives in the revival of Manipuri language and scripts.
