HPOT Centre inaugurated at RIMS

For the first time in the state, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has operationalized a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HPOT) Centre at its Burn Unit, on Monday.
Speaking during the launch function of the centre, RIMS director G Sunilkumar expressed confidence that the HPOT centre will help in the treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Wound Healing, Severe Anaemia, Delayed Radiation Injury or Radiation Necrosis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Compromised Grafts & Flaps, Vision loss or sudden hearing loss, Brain Abscess, etc.
Informing that RIMS is also the first to install HBOT centre in the entire North East region, the director elaborated that the therapy involves breathing oxygen at pressure higher than atmospheric pressure and administered in specially designed chambers which helps create ambient pressure-2-3 times higher than that found at sea level to help dissolve oxygen into blood.
It increases the oxygen delivery to tissues by 10-15 times as compared to the amount received through normal breathing.
Stimulating new blood vessels and capillary growth aid in wound healing and also in removal of toxins and waste products.
Thus, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has documented benefits in many diseases, he maintained.
In his address, RIMS Hospital medical superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh thanked the hospital authority for procuring very costly equipment which will benefit a lot by public in different spectrum of treatment.
Out patients can also avail the facility with payment of minimal fee, he said at the inauguration function also attended by RK Mecolt Singh (deputy director/Admn), Sairem Sarat Singh (CAO/FA), Dr Ak Ibohal Singh (Dept of Plastic Surgery head), HODs, faculty members as well as nursing officials and staff.
Briefly speaking on the occasion, Dr AK Ibohal expressed gratitude to the hospital authority for establishing the HPOT centre and expressed that it will help patients of other departments in getting necessary treatment.
Meanwhile, RIMS media advisor N Phillip Singh informed in a statement that director Prof Sunil Kumar Sharma also inaugurated a "New Staff Parking and Main Gate" for the Department of Psychiatry and Department of Clinical Psychology, on Monday in the presence of Prof N Sanjib Singh, RK Mecolt Singh, Sairem Sarat Singh, Dr S Gojendra Singh (Department of Psychiatry head), Prof RK Lenin Singh of Department of Psychiatry, and Dr Sameeta Ng (head of Department of Clinical Psychology) .
