Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Minister Khashim Vashum inaugurated the second edition of Haofa (Canine) Festival at Phungcham Village, Ukhrul today.
The festival was held under the theme "Preserve & Promote Haofa" a Tangkhul indigenous canine breed with headman of Phungcham Wungnaongam Horam as the chief host.
Khashim Vashum unveiled a seven feet Haofa statue at Gandhi Chowk Phungreitang, Ukhrul town before opening the festival.
Haofa has distinctive characteristics that make it special and different from other local dogs.

At the inauguration programme, Khashim Vashum said that Haofa is a valuable asset of the Tangkhul community, and breeding them can enhance the rural economy.
The Minister also said that Haofa is a rare canine breed that is native to Ukhrul district.
Saying that the demand of Haofa is high despite being costly, Khashim Vashum advocated taking the Haofa Festival to the district level and make it more popular.
Phungcham Haofa Lovers' Association (PHLA) president Tennoson Pheirey expressed gratitude to Khashim Vashum for sponsoring the festival.
He said that the Phungcham Haofa Lovers' Association was formed on October 10, 2021 to protect, preserve and promote Haofa.
According to him, the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal has initiated due processes to register Haofa with the National Bureau of Animals Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Haryana.
As part of the festival, the villagers showcased the traditional pounding and grinding of rice, musical shows and other cultural items.
The programme was also attended by Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul Kengoo Zuringla, DFO Shanngam Shaliwo, SDO Rohini A Kumar, DGM MSPDCL Akui L Shimray.
The festival was organised by Phungcham Haofa Lovers Association (PHLA) in collaboration with Phungcham Village Authority, VDC, Shanao Long and Mayar Ngala Long.
