Sit-in flays move to set up public-private parking at Temporary Market

Imphal, December 07 2014: Registering strong protest against the issuance of notice by Imphal Municipal Council regarding allotment of work tender in the form of lottery draw to be held on December 8 for construction of public-private parking slot at Temporary Market where street vendors are vending their wares, Road Side Vendors' Welfare Association staged a sit-in-protest at the market here today.

According to some street vendors, the association had already submitted written statement to IMC and other concerned departments requesting them to not float tender notice for construction of private parking slot at the market.

Saying that voices of street vendors should be heard by IMC and concerned departments, they strongly condemned the move to shift street vendors from the market.

Several demands were also put up by the protesters during the protest.

It included implementation of measures directed by Supreme Court meant for welfare for street vendors; exclusion of Temporary Market in the tender floated by IMC for setting of public-private parking; constitution of Town Vending Committee at the earliest; announcement of the area occupied by street vendors at Temporary Market as 'Vending Zone' and few others.

It may be mentioned here that police made an attempt to evict street vendors from the market on November 8 last but the attempt was thwarted by the latter.

Since then street vendors have been spending night in the market to foil such attempt in future.
