Imphal, August 20 2021:
The Central government is willing to recognise Manipuri language as one of the classical languages of the country and insert Meetei Mayek in the Indian currency, said Rajya Sabha MP and titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba.
In a video message re leased on the occasion of Manipuri Language Day, Sanajaoba said that Centre is ready to take up necessary steps in this regard and it is up to the state government to submit relevant recommendations without which the Centre could not do much.
During the parliament session on September 22 last year, he brought up the demand for recognition of Manipur language, which has already been recognised under 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, as a classical Indian language.
So far, only six languages of the country have been recognised as classical languages and Manipuri (Meeteilon) language will become the seventh if approved, he said.
At the same time, he also brought up the demand to insert Meetei Mayek (MM) in the Indian currency during the parliament session on February 12 this year.
Apart from Manipuri language, some other languages of the country are also in the race to get classical language status and in order to get the status, the state government needs to do the needful by consulting subject experts, Sanajaoba pointed out.
He also extended gratitude to activists, who stood for Manipuri language and script on the occasion of Manipuri Language Day, which commemorates the day on which Manipuri language got featured in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992 after huge public movement and efforts of several activists.
He then called upon the people of the state to promote Manipuri language to the global level and use it in day to day life as far as possible.
