Imphal, January 14 2013:
Expressing their woes and lack of basic facilities, villagers of Longa Koireng in Sadar Hills (West) under Saitu assembly constituency said that babies are being delivered at roadsides before reaching hospitals at Imphal and such incidents are no strange phenomenon for them.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao President of Longa Koireng Women Development Society, R Rengsongak, said that one of the major problems being faced by the villagers is health care.
Unfortunately, a village of around 600 people and more than 450 voters has not a single Primary Health Center (PHC) .
In today's society, where people are giving more importance to health and hygiene, villagers of Longa Koireng especially women, children who need extra care in this respect are still deprived of such facilities for years, and it is the cherished dream of all the villagers to have a PHC in the area, she added.
W Khelsong, Secretary of Longa Village Authority, pointed out that the village is not so far from the capital city but still it is lagging behind other villages in various aspects including education.
Apart from a Junior High School called Nongpok Haram Junior High School, there is no any other educational institute for higher studies in the village.
Because of this, after class VIII if a student wants to pursue further study, he or she has to go to Imphal.
But sending a child to Imphal for study incurs lots of money and it gives burden to the parents, who are poor and have no relatives in the city.
Moreover, since the village has no educational institute of higher studies, most of the students give up study after class VIII.
Highlighting the need for hygienic water in the village, the village development secretary said that authorities have never come to check the lone water supply reservoir at Longa Koireng village.
Today, all the pipelines have been broken and there is no water filter.
The secretary also pointed out that there is no community hall in the village.
