Imphal, December 07 2014: The 20th Death Anniversary of ex-Minister Moirangthem Ibotombi, father of Education Minister, M Okendro was observed by Moirangthem Ibotombi Memorial Trust under the theme 'Fighting the Menace of Crime Against Women & Children' at Moirangthem Ibotombi Memorial Complex, Heirok in Thoubal district today.

The observance function started with thousands of people and dignitaries including Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam; Parliamentary Secretaries; Ministers and MLAs offering floral tributes to the memorial complex of M Ibotombi as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

As part of the programme, Dy CM Gaikhangam inaugurated a newly built Water Lift Irrigation Canal at Heirok Champrakhong which was set up under the Local Area Development Fund of the constituency.

The irrigation canal is run by 6 kilo-watt solar power.

The Dy CM also laid foundation stone for setting up of a new village called 'Ningshing Khul' for settlement of BPL families of Heirok Constituency.

A target has been set to construct 300 houses for people belonging to BPL families residing in the constituency.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Gaikhangam conceded that many favorable changes witnessing in Heirok area which was lagging behind as compared to other constituencies in terms of development and infrastructure is due to the hard efforts put in by late M Ibotombi and his son M Okendro.

Applauding the initiative to set up 'Ningshing Khul' under the aegis of Moirangthem Ibotombi Memorial Trust and Minister M Okendro to home to BPL families, the Dy CM asserted that the initiative should be a lesson for other fellow Ministers and MLAs.

Late M Ibotombi was a dedicated political leader who had always wanted to bring growth in the State and maintain cordial relationship between the people of hills and valley, he acknowledged.

Hailing the trust for trying to materialize dreams of the late leader to bring in collective growth and development in the State, Gaikhangam said that it would be endless to point out good works done by the late leader.

On the ever increasing crime against women and children in the State, the Dy CM stated that the rate of violence in the past two-three years has been reduced significantly.

However, he said, the rate of crime against women and children has been increased which is a serious matter.

Keeping evil eye against women and ill-treating them amount to committing crime.

There are many men who do not know how to respect women, he maintained.

Saying that it is high time for people to join together to root out crime against women and children from the State once for all, Gaikhangam noted that the society will be flourished only after men and women co-exist together devoid of any crime and violence.

The Dy CM went on to say that Heirok Constituency is quite popular in the State for its unity which should persist.
