A non Manipuri labourer was hurt this morning when an iron rack of a hardware store, Raja Steel, in Thangal Keithel broke and fell upon the labourer.
The labourer, Dhanajoy Yadav (30) son of Biltu Rai Yadav is a native of Sitamarhi district of Bihar.
The store was owned by one Uttam Aggarwal (50) a native of Rajsthan and settled in Delhi.
The rack broke while Dhananjoy and three other labourers were loading plain sheets on the rack.
Another labourer Sigarsai Rai Yadav told Hueiyen Lanpao that the rack became overloaded and began to tilt down.
As soon as the rack began to tilt, the labourers began to run away.
Unfortunately, Dhananjoy Yadav slipped and fell down after which the rack broke and the pile of plain sheets fell upon him.
Manager Suresh Sharma of the store told Hueiyen Lanpao that the rack was built only some days back and built to be able to hold at least 100 tonnes of plain sheets.
There was only about five tonnes of plain sheets at the time of the incident.
However some neighbouring shop owners told Hueiyen Lanpao that there must be more than 25 tonnes of thick plain sheets.
Fearing more casualties of people stuck under the pile of sheets, personnel of Manipur Fire Service, and city police led by Fire Service Director, N Noren and OC, L Nabachandra rushed to the spot.
Volunteers of Red Cross Society, traffic policemen and local people rushed to help the victims.
After removing the plain sheets, they found that there were no other casualties.
Manipur Fire Service, Director N Noren said that the iron rack had only six stands.
He said that such racks should have been inspected by the Imphal Municipal Council or PWD and certified before use.
