Imphal, June 13 2013:
Concerned over increasing cases of drug trafficking in the State with involvement of security personnel and high profile people, Opposition Leader Dr I Ibohalbi raised a Calling Attention Motion on drugs issue drawing special attention to existence of pseudoephedrine extraction unit at Moreh during the fourth day sitting of the ongoing 5th Session of 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly today.
He said that the State is now facing the menace of drugs.
The presence of pseudoephedrine extraction unit at Moreh and subsequent filling up of Lokchao Canal with tablet covers as reported in Hueiyen Lanpao shows that the issue of drug trafficking in the State is at an alarming situation.
The pseudoephedrine tablets smuggled into Myanmar through Moreh have been used in the manufacture of a deadly drug known as "World is Yours", he noted.
The recent haul of huge consignment of drugs from an Army Colonel and other security personnel is a matter of serious concern.
The youths of the State would one day succumb to these deadly drugs if necessary measures were not taken up to curb drug trafficking.
Drug traffickers should be given strictest punishment to save the future of the society, he contended.
Replying to the motion, Home Minister Gaikhangam said that the State government has taken up stringent measures to thwart drug traffickers in the State.
The government would soon introduce strict legislation that would help in confiscating the properties of drug traffickers, he observed.
He further stated that security forces have raided various places in Moreh, but the specific location of the extraction unit could not be ascertained.
Manipur Police have left no stone unturned in seizing contraband drugs and arresting traffickers.
Many drugs traffickers have even landed in jails, Gaikhangam asserted.
He also said that the State government needs the support of social organizations and NGOs in combating the menace of drug abuse in the State.
