Ambulances, solar lamps given to Maram villagers under CCD plan

Imphal, July 08 2014: Maram is the only tribal community in Manipur that falls under the category of 'Primitive Tribe' and for advancement of this tribal community, the Government of India bestowed various incentives under the scheme of Conservative cum Development (CCD) Plan under the 12th Five Year Plan (from 2012 to 2017) .

This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who is also in-charge of Tribal Affairs and Hills, during a dedication programme of the scheme organised by the Department of Tribal Affairs & Hills at Kuki Inn here today.

As part of programme, Gaikhangam handed over three ambulance vans and dozens of solar lamps to villagers of Maram.

It is said that Maram community has a total of 24,108 population with 3136 households spreading over 37 villages in Senapati district, 33 villages under Mao-Maram subdivision and the remaining 4 villages under Kangpokpi sub division.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Gaikhangam stated that a sum of Rs 100 lakhs has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India for taking up various projects for the development the Maram community after several rounds of discussion.

Home lighting, mobile medical care, road connectivity, drinking water and minor irrigation are some of the development projects to cover by this Rs 100 lakhs.

Out of this total Rs 100 lakh, Rs 10 lakhs are for road connectivity in two places, Rs 15 lakhs for rural water supply in three villages, Rs 10 lakhs for minor irrigation in two places, Rs 10 lakhs under economic development programme for 20 families, Rs 21.47 lakhs for 123 households to be coveted by solar lighting, Rs 10 lakhs for special coaching for Maram students in three centres, Rs 15 lakhs for mobile medical care in 10 villages, Rs 1.53 lakh for low cost sanitation of 13 households, Rs 2 lakhs for Maram dialect development and finally Rs 5 lakhs for the updating of baseline survey.

Reiterating that the Government of Manipur is committed to bringing about development in the remote hill areas of the State, Gaikhangam maintained that solar lamps which were distributed today would do a great job in Maram village where regular electricity supply is not available.

Similarly, the ambulance vans will be very helpful during medical emergencies in the remote area of Maram, the Deputy Chief Minister further informed that doctors, nurses and drivers have been engaged for the mobile medical care programme.

RD & PR Minister Francis Ngajokpa and Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga were also present during the programme as functional president and guest of honour respectively.
