Ukhrul, October 31 2015 :
Amidst the district bustling with harvest season, varied Tangkhul crop-reaping folk renditions and instrumental recitals enthralled a passel of participants during a cultural programme cum media workshop held on 30 October at Awontang Community Hall in Ukhrul district headquarters.
Aimed at preserving the dwindling Tangkhul culture among the younger generation, the cultural event under the theme 'Cultural Rejuvenation' was organized by the Ukhrul District Working Journalists Association (UDWJA) under the sponsorship of Tribal Research Institute (TRI) Imphal.
Attending the cultural event as chief guest, Hrishikeesh Modak deputy commissioner Ukhrul said that culture is one of the most important ways of life for the indigenous people.
He then said during the short period of his current tenure here in Ukhrul district, he has observed that the Tangkhul community has a rich cultural heritage.
Stating that the media workshop was a necessity, Modak said that media is a very powerful tool and it can build or mar the personality/character of an individual at the same time.
He then urged the media fraternity based in Ukhrul district to go for finer details in performing their duties and in filing any stories so as to preempt inadvertent victimization of individuals.
Showcasing the rich Tangkhul cultural heritage, Hunphun Khanuithot Cultural Research Forum (HKCRF) enthralled the gathering with a varied range of cultural harvest renditions, while Hangpui Sareo displayed his versatile talents in myriad melody through traditional trumpet citations.
As part of the event, an interactive discussion on the role of media in social harmony and development was held later in the evening.
The deliberation was moderated by Artax A Shimray, former secretary general, NESO while social activist Ngachonmi Chamroy, international peace researcher Dr.Achan Mungleng and human rights activist Ningreichon Tungshang attended as panelists.
Meanwhile, UDWJA has expressed deep gratitude to the Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Imphal for extending its cooperation to the district media fraternity by sponsoring the cultural event.
