Imphal, April 28 2024:
Education (Schools) Department Physical Education Teachers' Association, Imphal has expressed strong disapproval towards the National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT), New Delhi for the misattribution of the traditional Manipuri game, Mukna-Kangjei, to Mizoram in an NCERT publication titled 'Learning Through Traditional Games'.
The Association, in a statement, condemned this attribution, emphasising that Mukna-Kangjei holds deep cultural and historical significance in Manipur.
The association has called upon various state authorities, including the education minister, department, State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT), and the chief minister, to intervene and rectify the error with NCERT.
They asserted that such a misattribution could potentially misinform readers and undermine the rich cultural heritage of Manipur.
Mention may be made that despite being listed under Mizoram in the chapter heading of the 88-page book, the subsequent text on pages 24 to 26 correctly attributes the game to Manipur.
Moreover, the chapter includes a map of Manipur and photographs depicting players engaged in the game.
As the error may have resulted from a typographical or proofreading mistake, it is still important to correct it promptly to prevent any further confusion or misinformation.
