Gaikhangam bats for upholding rule of law by everyone

Imphal, September 15 2015: Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has stated that respecting and upholding the established rule of law will reduce crime rate in the State.

"Law is indispensable part of a democratic set up and therefore we ought to regard it to make a good society," the Deputy Chief Minister emphasized while participating in the 64th foundation day celebration of All Manipur Bar Association at Cheirap Court Complex on Tuesday.

He disliked mob trial which is often witnessed in the State and said this type of ostensible justice is not acceptable in a democratic set up where law exists above all.

Gaikhangam said that arson attack and destruction of houses by mob over any crime committed by an individual distorts the life of the entire family.

The legal fraternity needs to give awareness to the public to make them familiar with the nuances of law, Gaikhangam suggested.

"In a nutshell, law can be considered as common sense.

If everyone endorses the rule of law, peace will prevail in the State," he added.

Meanwhile, Gaikhangam said that for the third time the Government has invited the disgruntled groups for talks to bring about a clear-cut solution to the controversy surrounding the three Government Bills.

The Government is waiting for response from the agitating groups to hold talks and end the deadlock, he added.

Senior advocate Khaidem Mani said that in its insistent work AMBA has produced a number of ministers, judges and advocate generals over the years.

Meanwhile, Khaidem Mani was resolute that the three Government Bills passed in the State Assembly on August 31 contain any point that can harm the interest of the hill districts.

He said this issue can be resolved through dialogue process by making changes in the three Bills.

AMBA President senior advocate H Indrajit Sharma, Advocate general Th Ibohal, Bar Council of Manipur Chairman senior advocate L Ibotombi, retired Judge Justice H Kaminikumar, retired Judge Justice Maibam Binoikumar, retired Judge Mutum Binoikumar, High Court Bar Association Manipur president Th Binoikumar, All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) President Wangkhemcha Shamjai and many others were present during the function.

Floral tributes were paid to late AMBA members and a two-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls on the occasion.

Elder advocates were also presented with simple gifts to mark the occasion.
