Thoubal, May 03 2023: As a part of the valedictory ceremony of Ibudhou Wangbrel and Ibendhou Ereima Haraoba (sacred festival associated with the worship of traditional deities), Hiyang Taanaba (traditional boat race) event was held today at Thoubal river.

Teams of Laroi Pana and Singloi Pana participated in the boat race where Laroi Pana of men led by Asem Shyam won the race while for women, it was won by Laroi Pana led by Asem Sharmila Chanu.

Speaking in connection with the event, former secretary of Lai Committee Asem Kumarjit said that Ibudhou Wangbrel and Ibendhou Ereima Haraoba is held every year starting from the third day till the thirteenth day of Kalen month of Manipuri lunar calendar.

Hiyang Taanaba is conducted to mark the last day of Lai Haraoba every year, he added.

He continued that the boat race is categorized into three groups of unmarried male, female and married women.

However, this year since the group of married women has not participated, therefore the boat race is held among two categories only, he said.
