'Deprived should be given free legal help'

Imphal, March 22 2015:
People from poor economic background should be provided free legal help to ensure justice, District & Sessions Judge, East A Guneshwor has said on Sunday.
Judge Guneshwor was participating in a "State Level Legal Awareness Programme" jointly organized by Legal Services Authority, Imphal East and UNACCO School, Khongman at the school premises.
Guneshwor added that educated section of the society know their basic rights, which is opposite to the underprivileged people.
He said free legal help should be given to the impoverished section to ensure justice.
Guneshwor noted that people belonging to Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste communities and women and children and rape victims and family whose yearly income is below 1 lakh can avail free legal help.
Guneshwor said people can also enjoy the benefit of Lok Adalat.
Ng Tejkumar, Director, Prosecution, spoke at the programme as a resource person.
He said a person can be arrested for committing any crime by police who will have to produce the person in turn before a magistrate within 24 hour.
Trial against the offender is conducted by the court only, he added.
One of the participants of the proramme, UNACCO managing director N Irabanta in his speech stressed on the need for understanding the law by people.
Imphal East Deputy Commissioner M Joy also attended the programme.
He said various Acts are useless if they are not implemented.
Superintendent of Police, Imphal East Police, Angam Kamei Romanus was also present at the event.
